The following are policies for Leverett's Announce and Open mailing lists. To subscribe of unsubscribe, visit the subscription wizard.

The Leverett announce list is a forum for Leverites to announce Leverett House events and campus events sponsored by Harvard organizations. See the Announce List Rules before posting. The Announce list is moderated by Chief and others, thus there may be a short delay in posting. You should not use subject lines with ambiguous future time references like "tomorrow" because they may not be posted until tomorrow - use the day of the week instead. This list is moderated because all Leverites are encouraged to participate in the Announce list and we want to keep the posts as useful and informative as possible. Note that if you subscribe to the Open List, you are AUTOMATICALLY subscribed to the Announce List. In particular, this means that you cannot unsubscribe from Announce unless you also unsubscribe from the Open List.

The Leverett open list is a forum for informal house dialogue and activity. Posts are welcomed on a wide variety of subjects from "would more Leverites show up to hoco meetings at midnight?" to "what happened in Justice section this afternoon?" to "which wood chipper would best handle our dining hall painting?". Read the Open List Rules before posting.

Don't post to both announce and open. Everyone who reads open reads announce, and if your message is posted to both, your announce posting may not be accepted. Repeat offenders may be banned from the lists.

Announce List Rules

Rules must be read before posting: All rules are subject to change by the housemaster.

  1. The announce list is for Leverites only.
Only those on the list may post to it. If you attempt to send mail to the list from an email account other than the one listed in your facebook entry, your post will not be mailed.
  2. You may not add extra addresses to announce messages.
If you add additional addresses besides announce@leverett.harvard.edu, your post will not be mailed.
  3. Not all events are appropriate for the announce list.
You must verify that all of the following are true before posting an event to the announce list:
    • The event is sponsored by a Harvard office or registered student organization.
    • The event is not sponsored or in any way affiliated with any outside organization that practices discrimination in the selection of its members or officers, such that it would be in violation of the policies that govern Harvard student organizations.
    • The event does not advertise for a commercial entity or advertise an event held on behalf of a commercial entity. Student organizations are explicitly forbidden from accepting any corporate sponsorship in return for posting to promote or announce products, recruiting sessions, corporate resume screenings, or other corporate events to our mailing lists. If you think a business event should be advertised to our students, please contact the house pre-business tutors.
If you are not sure if your message is appropriate, ask Chief before you post!
  4. Respect the reader's time and attention.
After all, as many as 500 busy people will receive your message.
    • No more than two announcements should be made for any given event; one when the event is first scheduled, and a reminder within 24 hours of the event.
    • Make your message succinct and direct, putting essentials facts at the top of your message and putting promotional information, ASCII art, or other material later.
    • No message should encourage further posts to the announce list.
  5. Create a meaningful subject line.
Respect reader's need for easy to extract information above your desire to get the reader's attention.
    • Do not use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS or extraneous *punctuation* to highlight words. Placing words in all capital letters is the email equivalent of shouting and only leads others to raise the volume of their posts. Universally recognized acronyms may be capitalized.
    • The succinct subject line should describe the event first, optionally follwed by the event title if appropriate. The post should not assume the reader already knows the title of your party/event and should not be used to drill a new slogan into the minds of leverites. For example, an inappropriate subject might look like this:
      Currierosity: It Killed the Cat.
whereas an appropriate subject line would look more like this:
      Dance@Currier -'Currierosity'- Friday 9:00PM
    • Subject lines should contain the date and time of the event.
    • Subject lines should be cleansed of any extraneous information such as forwarding indicators (e.g. 'FWD:') and requests to forward the message widely.

Other Guidelines

If possible, please customize your announcement to explain its significance to the Leverett House community. For instance, if announcing a performance, list which Leverites will be performing at the top of the message. This will not only make your message more valuable to those reading it, but may also increase the success of your announcement.

How to improve your subject lines: a worked example

You can't miss this!

D'oh! Your fellow leverites deserve information, not self-promotion.

Great Music!

D'oh! This message doesn't describe an event, but rather the author's views on it.

Chello with Yo Ma Ma!

D'oh! Check your spelling before sending your message, or prepare to be embearassed [SIC] in front of 500 people.

Cello with Yoyo Ma!

D'oh! Don't forget to include the date & time of the event.

Cello with Yoyo Ma - 9:30 Saturday (Dec 10)

D'oh! Oh, so I get to play cello with Yoyo Ma? Cool!

Yoyo Ma Plays Cello - 9:30p Saturday (Dec 10) - SciCtr C

Woohoo! Now that's succinct! We even got the location in there for folks who can read long subject lines.

Open List Rules

  1. The open list is for Leverites only.
Only those on a list may post to it. If you attempt to send mail to the list from an email account other than the one listed in your facebook entry, your post will not be mailed.
  2. No commercial solicitations.
No message should advertise on behalf of a commercial entity. Student organizations are explicitly forbidden from accepting any corporate sponsorship in return for advertising products, recruiting sessions, corporate resume screenings, or other corporate events to our mailing lists. You are free to express both positive and negative opinions about a commercial entity if, and only if, you and your friends do not stand to profit as a result.
  3. Respect others' time when constructing your subject line.
Even though this is an open list, a succinct subject line goes a long way to making this list more accessible to everyone.
  4. Be respectful of others.
All posts must be respectful of all members of the Leverett community. While you should feel free to state discontent, please be sure not to do so by attacking members of the community. If there is an individual behind your frustrations, do your best separate the issue from the person. For example, "why can't that *#$&@ in B-22 turn down his music" is inappropriate. However "the music in B-22 is driving me crazy" expresses the same level of frustration while separating the issue from the individual on the other side of the issue.
  5. By subscribing to the open list you agree to respect others' privacy.
In order to ensure that house discussion remains open and honest, no post may be forwarded, quoted, or reprinted without the permission of the author or the housemaster. Anyone participating in a violation of this policy will be considered to have violated the privacy of a Harvard student and may have to face the administrative board.
