  • Medical School Admissions Requirements, a complete compendium of information on all U.S. and Canadian medical schools put out by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Includes chapters on choosing a medical school, taking the MCAT, financing a medical education, combined degree programs, opportunities for minority students, and information for foreign applicants. It is strongly advised that you get your own copy of this book as you enter the application cycle. It can be purchased at the COOP or ordered from the AAMC (see below) for $25.00. A CD-ROM version can be obtained from the AAMC for the same price.

  • My Own Country: A Doctor's Story, by Abraham Verghese. Vintage Books, 1995. Experiences of a young doctor witnessing the introduction of HIV/AIDS to a town in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.
  • Bag, Balm, and Duct Tape: Tales of a Vermont Doctor, by Beach Conger. Fawcett Books, 1995. Trials and tribulations of a neophyte doctor from Berkeley, California starting a practice in rural Vermont.
  • Heirs of General Practice, by John McPhee. Noonday Press, 1986. Paints an interesting and inspiring picture of what it's like to be a general practitioner in the potato country of northern Maine.
  • The Social Transformation of American Medicine, by Paul Starr. Basic Books, 1984. An introduction to some of the changes and trends in American medicine over the past century. Fifteen years old but prescient and a good introduction to the structure of modern medicine in the U.S..
  • The Definitive Guide to Medical School Admissions, by Mark Goldstein, the pre-medical advisor at M.I.T., and Myrna Goldstein. Font and Center Press, 1998. This book is friendly and conversational in tone and contains a bunch of winning sample medical school application essays.
